Our expeditions are authentic astronaut training experiences in hostile, yet stunning surroundings, designed for ordinary people to become extraordinary. An unforgettable adventure taking place in an out-of-this-world environment. Our training is provided by world-class leaders within their field, including former NASA astronauts. Expedition group sizes are small – between 8 to 12 cadets – to ensure intimacy and the unique personal training experience.

Vatnajökull Glacier (Cat 4)

The Interstellar Expedition

In the volatile and constantly changing environment of Iceland’s largest glacier you will train your Astronaut Mindset in expeditionary skills. We will focus on adapting to extreme environments in the otherworldly surroundings of the film Interstellar. You will be trained in mountaineering, superjeep driving and adaptability. You will be tested under different leadership styles of the Polar explorers, of Amundsen, Scott and Shackleton. In addition we will look at how you build endurance in your team, deal with isolation and solitude and explore the relativity of time.

This expedition is a prerequisite for an upcoming Antarctica expedition.

WHAT TO EXPECT

 

Once you arrive to the Reykjavik airport, we have planned everything for you so that you can focus on the Expedition, meeting your fellow astronaut cadets and to enjoy the adventure. We have arranged food, drinks, accommodations and the necessary gear for you. ITINERARY

 

Day 1: Arrive in Iceland.
Enjoy your first night at the Hotel Hilton Canopy in Reykjavik.

Day 2: Driving to Vatnajökull glacier setting up the first camp. Equipment testing, basic training and preparations. Understanding the environment, volcanoes and glacier behavior.

Day 3: Heading up the glacier. Getting to know and navigate the glacier. Team development and survival training. Leadership lessons.

Day 4: Esjufjöll mountains. Astronaut training missions, ice climbing and glaciology.

Day 5: Heading over to Grímsfjall volcano. Training mission with astronaut Gregory “Box” Johnson. Arctic Trucks driving exercises.

Day 6: Heading back to Reykjavik from the glacier. Debriefing at Arctic Trucks headquarters. Celebratory dinner and accommodations at the Hotel Hilton Canopy in Reykjavik.

Day 7 (&8): Optional geothermal baths and other soothing relaxation that Iceland has to offer. Fly back.

Adapting to space by former NASA astronaut Gregory “Box” Johnson.The race to the South Pole and the different leadership styles of Scott, Amundsen and Shackleton – expeditionary skills of astronauts, and how they apply to your daily life.

Mountaineering and adapting to extreme environments by Vilborg Arna Gissurardóttir who is the first and still only woman to go solo to both the South Pole and a summit above 8,000 meters.

Driving expedition vehicles in custom made polar vehicles from Arctic Trucks, a company that has done over 30 Antarctica expeditions and led the Top Gear North Pole Race.

Experiential exploration of the relativity of time and training of the most important astronaut skill in our rapidly changing world, adaptability.

Askja Caldera (Cat 3)

The Moon Landing Expedition

In the same location where the Apollo astronauts trained before going to the Moon, you will train your Astronaut Mindset in the spirit of Apollo astronauts. This expedition focuses on astronomy, geology, navigation, communications, crisis management, survival and search and rescue. It takes place in the lunar-like environments of the Icelandic highlands, in the midst of vast lava fields and breathtaking craters of active volcanoes.

ITINERARY

 

Day 1: Arrive in Iceland.
Enjoy your first night at the Hotel Hilton Canopy in Reykjavik.

Day 2: Drive Northeast across the black, volcanic deserts of Iceland.

On-boarding, mission briefing, and training begins.
Setting up camp in the wilderness.

Day 3: Moon Rover mission in lunar landscapes.

Head out to Askja Caldera, one of Iceland’s largest active volcanoes. Camp out in field expedition tents.

Day 4: Specific on-site training missions at the Víti crater (Hell Crater) and Nautagil canyon, where the Apollo training took place. Camp out in tents.

Day 5: The Ultimate Challenge.

Use all your newly acquired and refined skills from the previous days. Rest in a hotel in Husavik.

Day 6: Visit the Exploration Museum in Husavik.

Debrief and learnings from the expedition. Celebratory dinner.
Discuss next steps on your astronaut candidate journey. Enjoy your last night in comfort in a soft, warm bed at the Hotel Hilton Canopy in Reykjavik.

Day 7 (& 8): Optional geothermal baths and/or other soothing relaxation. Fly back.

 

YOUR EXPERIENCE INCLUDES

 

You will undergo astronaut training on the footsteps of Neil Armstrong, learn about the expeditionary skills of astronauts and how they can be applied to your daily life by former NASA astronaut Gregory “Box Johnson among else.

Your team building and leadership skills will be put to the test. Roles, responsibilities and talents identified, tried, shifted and tested under pressure and crisis.

The importance of direct communication and setting up clear communication channels will be tested. Our CAPCOM system will be explained and tested.

You will be put into situations that demand creative problem finding in addition to solving them. You will experience survival training as part of this.

You will learn about geology on Earth, on the Moon, on Mars, and in our solar system . You will learn about geological changes, adaptability, terraforming and geo-engineering, climates and survival in different environments.

You will learn about the actual training provided to Apollo astronauts, the challenges they faced, and the developments in space exploration in the past, present and future. You learn about humanity’s expansion into space from the people who are at the forefront of it.

Your training starts after you reserve your spot

You will receive your special invitation letter on how to prepare for the Expedition. You will start your pre-training and assessment phase. We will prepare you to make sure that you have an unforgettable adventure.

After the Expedition you will get a custom patch, a certificate as part of the Space Nation Astronaut Program, and you will begin your post-training and assessment phase. You open a special chapter in your journey, which we will reveal once you have completed an Expedition.

Requirements

Each expedition is graded based on our own grading system. On a scale from 1 to 5 we offer expeditions of varying difficulty. They are all mentally challenging, but the higher the scale, the longer the duration and the more extreme the environment.

For example, physical requirements for Category 4 Expeditions such as the Interstellar Expedition is the ability to walk 10 miles / 16 kilometers off trail in a day. For Category 3 Expeditions such as the Moon Landing Expedition you should be able to walk 6 miles / 10 kilometers off trail in a day.

Our Expeditions are made for all ages 18 and above. You will experience a personalized training adventure as part of a special international group of pioneers in the most beautiful and otherworldly surroundings on Earth.
